Peepgass’s “Red Dog”
A Man in FullPeepgass’s “Red Dog” names the ambition and initiative that Raymond Peepgass has kept on a leash. Its release marks a shift from professional passivity toward action, but the metaphor carries a warning: once Peepgass allows that force to run, he cannot simply return to the safety of restraint.
The Metaphor’s Release
After Herb Richman studies him, breaks eye contact, and says that Peepgass has piqued his interest, Peepgass feels fear mixed with giddy elation. The reaction is bodily as well as emotional: the feeling suffuses him and makes his hands turn cold. Peepgass understands the moment as a threshold he has crossed: “Well, he had done it now. He had let the red dog out for a romp, and there was no slipping a leash back on him.” The dog figures an appetite for initiative that is thrilling precisely because it cannot be recalled at will.
The Leash and Self-Imprisonment
The image returns as Peepgass considers his own career while visiting the old public library in Nassau. Its former cells prompt him to imagine the possibility of incarceration if his overseas venture misfires. He then turns the comparison inward: continuing as a timid, narrowly defined staff officer until PlannersBanc rewards him with a Steuben-glass phoenix—or dismisses him—would be a form of self-imprisonment. The bank’s retirement gift is already known internally as “getting the bird,” a sardonic name that makes waiting for institutional approval look less like security than humiliation.
Ambition Against Passivity
Peepgass’s self-reproach turns the Red Dog from a burst of feeling into a choice about how to live. He has to decide whether to keep his ambition restrained while waiting for recognition or to take the risk of acting before that recognition arrives. The metaphor links his encounter with Richman to the resolve he gathers in Nassau: in both moments, the possibility of change brings unease, but remaining safely passive has its own cost. The Red Dog thus represents not a guaranteed success, but the difficult, irreversible release of initiative.
